Testing of real equipment has started between network and terminal vendors

MUNICH – The LTE SAE Trial Initiative (LSTI), a unique global collaboration between vendors and operators, has received first declarations of test results from network vendor and terminal vendor groups successfully performing Interoperability Testing (IOT). This means that the telecommunications industry is now testing on 3GPP standards compliant platforms that are intended for commercial use in terms of radio access network and terminal equipment.

The declaration of results reported indicate that the first vendors are able to connect terminals to a LTE radio access network based on the 3GPP R8 March 2009 standard and basic communication was possible. LSTI has already received several declarations from network and terminal vendor pairs performing IODT (InterOperability Design Test) on standard compliant prototypes on different functional levels. The transition from testing on prototype platforms to commercial platform in the testing is an important indicator about the industry’s confidence in the maturity of the specifications and LSTI’s goal to also perform testing of the LTE/SAE technology through real operator driven network setups in friendly customer trials (FCT).

According to Christian Kuhlins, LSTI Activity Manager IOT, Ericsson AB, the availability of the first successful IOT declaration of results is very important: “We can now see that the telecommunications industry is about to take a major step towards maturity of LTE/SAE equipment. First commercial network and terminal equipment will be available on the market soon. LSTI is an important platform to visualize progress of the LTE/SAE technology and the industry to the public. Thanks to the definition of the LSTI IOT test specifications, which also includes interoperability testing of important LTE-EPC interface features in the core network, the progress will give indications about the maturity of the entire technology eco-system.”

About LSTI
The LTE/SAE Trial Initiative (LSTI) is a global, collaborative technology trial initiative focused on accelerating the availability of commercial and interoperable next generation LTE mobile broadband systems. The Initiative was formally launched in May 2007 by leading telecommunications companies. Since its inception LSTI has expanded to include 39 members, click here to see a full list of members.
